Normally, you use only 20% of your lung capacity. It leads to imbalance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body. Correct breathing leads to a purified blood, and more energy in the body, and sense of calm in the mind.
Going through various stresses and tensions of your life, you forget to take deep breaths. How does it happen? It is a normal reaction of the body that when you are tense and anxious, you start taking shallow breaths. It is a part of the fight or flight response that your body adopts to ward off any threats in the immediate surroundings. The heartbeat quickens, metabolism is slowed down, and the blood rushes to arms and legs. When the situation is normal, your body returns to its normal functioning.
It is a sad aspect of the present day living that there is so much tensions in living that your mind and body are compelled to remain under stress for prolonged periods - so much so that the emergency reactions of the body take place very frequently and for long periods.
