Mind-field

Our minds can be drunken monkeys, flitting from one thought to the next. When you are trying to concentrate on something but notice you are drifting off to think about something else, use this technique to learn to stay focused. It will also help your thought process to become quiet, so that your train of thinking slows and focuses. You can stop the world, step outside of time and space, and yet remain fully aware in the now moment.

Time for Exercise: five to 15 minutes

Properties Required: none

Steps:

1.Catch your mind wandering off-topic.

2.Stop and name the process, for example: “I just realized that I am thinking about something completely different from what I want to be focusing my attention on.”

3.Ask the questions: “How did I get from my original topic to this one? What was the bridge that enabled my thought to jump off-track to this completely different topic?”

4.Trace your thoughts backwards, from the last thought you had when you caught yourself being off-topic, and follow the thought track back to your original focus of attention. You will notice that one image or idea was like another. Your mind switched onto that other track without your awareness and certainly without your conscious permission.

Meditation Example:

I am sitting comfortably trying to be still in body and mind. I notice that I am thinking about buying a new car. Where did the image of a red convertible come from? I call on my short-term memory and work backwards through the thoughts that preceded that image: “It is time to start thinking about getting a new car. I remember the mileage on my car is getting high. I get an image of my car. The horn reminds me of the sound of my horn. I hear a horn honk.”

Comments:

This simple process will enable you to quickly catch your train of thought whenever it jumps off track. Eventually your thought stays on track more and more. When it does wander, after you’ve practiced this technique for a while, you will not need to do the thought backtracking process, just jump back to where you want to be.

My family is descended from the Algonquin’s. If I were to try to get in touch with a member of the tribe to learn more about where my family comes from how would I go about it

Hi Grace,
Tribes don’t usually offer any genealogy services, at least none that I am aware of. The tribe will not be able to “look you up” and see if you are a descendent of theirs. You will need to do this work yourself or hire a professional genealogist to do the work for you, which is not usually cheap.

Once you have all your genealogical information including your ancestor’s full name, presence on any Indian rolls with applicable roll numbers, and exact relationship to you, then you may contact the tribal enrollment office of your specific tribe and inquire about their citizenship laws.

There is no point in contacting the tribe before you have obtained this information–if you can’t even find this information about your own family, then how could they? By now, each tribe has thousands (some hundreds of thousands) of decendants with various intermarriages with a number of other indian and non-indian cultures, varying mixtures of tribal blood, and many misspellings of each family surname. In addition, many individuals had both an Indian name and an English name, and some changed names several times in their lifetimes. Most tribes couldn’t possibly afford office staff to offer such services to sort it all out for you and the thousands of others like you who are searching for their native american roots.

The majority of native american tribes still do not have internet connections or websites. Many do not even have phone lines yet. Most tribes in America, with a few exceptions, still have an economic status comparable to third world countries, and tracing genealogy for people who “might” be related to their tribe is the least of their worries.

They expect you first to do the legwork and find out what government role lists your ancestor with Algonquin blood. Then you must trace down all the birth and death certificates establishing the bloodline from that ancestor directly to yourself, and provide them with the name and numbers of the rolls you found your ancestor on and also provide them with originals of the documents that prove that lineage continues to you, before they will even consider starting the enrollment process. This can take hundreds of man hours to accomplish, and none of the tribes I am aware of have funding for such services. Once you have accomplished all this, then they may be able to “look you up” and confirm your ancestor is on thier rolls.

First you would need to establish which Algonquin tribe you are talking about, as there are a number of them. There is a loose confederacy of Algonquin tribes in Canada. They number about 8,000 tribal members, organized into ten separate First Nations, nine are in Quebec and one in Ontario.

Flexible Thinking

You have the power over what you think about. You also have the power over how you think about what you think about.

Your brain performs various functions, such as recalling, thinking, and imagining, in particular ways. Each of your five senses includes a number of subcategories of information—submodalities. When you experience or remember something joyful, painful, or frightening, you do so in a unique way, using particular senses and their submodalities. By consciously changing the submodalities you use to remember experiences, you actually change your memories and assign them different meanings.

Time for Exercise: 30 minutes to one hour

Properties Required: pen and paper

Steps:

1.Recall an extraordinary experience in which you felt joyous, happy, and full of wonder. This can be any experience, anywhere, anytime.

2.Identify your key submodalities for this type of experience. For example, if you are primarily visual, is the picture up close or far away? What color is the background? Is the picture bright or dim? Is the picture black and white or in color? Is the picture moving or still? Where in your consciousness is the picture located, for example, front and center, front lower right, behind your head, high up or low? Is the picture associated (as if you were right in the scene re-experiencing it) or disassociated (as if you were watching a movie)?

If you are primarily auditory, is the sound loud or soft? Is it slow or fast? Is it continuous or interrupted? Which direction is the sound coming from? Is the sound stereo or monaural? Is it close or far away? Is it rhythmical or discordant? Do you hear music and/or talking? Is the experience associated or disassociated? Is the sound inside or outside you?

If you are primarily kinesthetic, do you notice weight, pressure, temperature, and/or movement? Does your skin feel tactile sensations? Do your muscles and internal organs feel sensations? Where are these located? Do they fade in and out, or are they continuous? How long do they last? Where do they start and end if they move around?

3.Recall any ordinary sexual experience. Don’t pick one that was extraordinary (either great or awful). Identify your key submodalities for this experience as you did above—visual, auditory, and kinesthetic details.

4.In your imagination, deliberately change on sub-modality (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) at a time so that your inner experience for the ordinary sexual encounter is perceived in the same way as the joyous experience. For example, if the ordinary experience is primarily visual with the picture fuzzy, far away, off to one side, fading in and out, black and white, but the joyous experience is clear, close up, centered in your field of vision, and in color, deliberately change how you see the ordinary experience. Make it clear, close up, centered, colorful and so on. Notice how this changes your remembrance of the sexual experience and your feelings about it.

Comments:

You can use this process to change your perceptions of not just sexual experiences but of any situation.

When you act without thinking, caught up in habit, emotional overreaction, or conditioned behavior, you become powerless. Cultivating your observer consciousness—the ability to see yourself objectively as you act and react in your daily life—gives you the power of choice. This simple exercise helps you start to awaken your witness.

Time for Exercise: five minutes

Properties Required: none

Steps:

For five minutes today put on your “witness hat” and observe carefully and in detail what you are doing.  For example: “Now I’m walking to the fridge to get an ice cream snack. Why do I want it? Because I’m bored and tired. Is there something else I can do instead? All right, I’ll have a long drink of water and then relax with a good book for a few minutes. Now I’m getting a glass and filling it with water. I’m drinking the water, and it feels cool and refreshing. I’m walking slowly toward the bookshelf to select a book…(and so on for five minutes).”

Comments:

Although you might feel silly, speaking aloud your observations helps you witness. Doing things that make you feel a little foolish helps you move past the tendency to take yourself too seriously. Life is serious, but it doesn’t have to be grave.
